A brief history
When Châtel (1200-2100 m) still was a farmer mountain village, the first pioneers of tourism carefully tried to encourage the villagers to become a thermal spa area for those looking for rest and recovery. But they didn't succeed and the main activity in the village stayed -as it has been for centuries- agriculture and livestock. But when the first skiers discovered the area (they climbed the hills by themselves at that time) Châtel slowly turned into a village for winter sports. In 1948 the first ski school was founded by the father of the future ski champion Francois Macchi. Châtel as agricultural annex ski village became more and more an established fact.
In the 50s a rich Parisian developed Super-Châtel into a ski-area. At that time, the ski slope to Morgins (in Switzerland) was constructed. This was the beginning of Les Portes du Soleil. A whole ski infrastructure was build during those years with shops, nurseries, hotels, sports facilities and more. Especially tourists from Paris discovered the new place and not only during wintertimes. Châtel became a energetic place to be in summer and winter and a great escape from 'citylife'.
In the 70s, tourism increased when other Europeans (from North, East and South Europe) bought holiday homes. This was nice, but the community wanted to preserve a part of the authentic character of the village also. So Châtel became a mix of authenticity and modernity. Now, in 2015, it is a lively, varied and charming village with lots to do. Authentic as for many Châtellans (inhabitants of Châtel) still make a living out of agriculture and livestock. Châtel in the meantime, moreover, with the comprehensive and family-friendly facilities, got the official status of Famille Plus Montagne. This is a label issued by the French Minister of Tourism, which indicates that the place is very suitable for families with children.
Le numéro 5
During late 70s five chalets were built under the common name 'Clair de Lune'. The fifth and final house, at the highest point, was bought by our grandmother: grandma Oyevaar-Boer. She gave the house the name le numéro 5. In the years that followed, family came from everywhere to the ski chalet to enjoy with other familymembers and / or friends. Not only because of the cozy le numéro 5, but certainly also because the magical atmosphere of Châtel and surroundings. Throughout the year. That is why we know the area and the various options very well.
